Canada Raw Milk Farmer’s Call To Arms

“The centralisation of our food system is currently the greatest danger to the food security of our nation.”

Since I am on the topic of raw milk this week I have to post this very important statement from Michael Schmidt. It was presented at a news conference on the steps of the Alberta Legislature, November 8th, 2010, this declaration is a powerful call to arms to support the small farmer and bring back small farms, and a rejection to recognize officials who refuse to even enter into a discussion:

Agriculture has been the backbone of Canada. History has taught us that a healthy agriculture is able to feed all the people and therefore creates a healthy and socially stable environment.

At the turn of the last century 70% of our Canadian population was actively involved in farming.

Quest for Raw Milk

The community of real milk.

I’ve been talking a lot about raw milk lately, but haven’t really explained much of my own history and why I am so passionate about such a strange thing. While making my weekly journey to pick up my share of raw milk, the bright orange colors of the fall leaves stimulated memories from my own quest for raw milk….

Come to think of it, one of the cowshare members from our community meeting last night asked me how I got interested in raw milk, so I have had it on my mind. It is really exciting and interesting to meet the people involved in the Our Cows cowshare. In many ways I am glad that Fraser Health has forced us to come together as a community.

I am not really sure when I decided to find a way to drink raw milk. A moment I can put my finger on is a day in the back alleys of Kao San Road in Bangkok. I was killing time, waiting for my visa to Burma to be processed, when I found a book in a remote corner of an overloaded trinket/bookstore: The Traditional Healer’s Handbook: A Classic Guide to the Medicine of Avicenna by Hakim G.M. Chishti N.D.

Purple Cow Ice Cream

Now we are talking extra tasty and healthy, with the right ingredients! Please only use top quality raw milk and eggs from a farmer you know for this recipe for full nutritional benefits.

Purple cow was the name given to a favorite drink of yester-year: fresh raw milk and freshly pressed concord grape juice. We simply took this to the next level and made it into raw purple cow ice-cream!

Pottenger’s Cats

I have been mentioning Pottenger’s Cats quite frequently of late, as our cat Mishka is also from Pasadena originally and she just loves raw milk and cream. This hasn’t always been the case. About a year ago I noticed a bald patch which was growing over her liver, we were too broke to take her to the vet, so I switched her to raw meat. My first attempt was very sad, as I foolishly gave her raw pork without freezing it first to kill off any parasites and she soon got tapeworm, so we had to de-worm her.

I then decided since cats wouldn’t eat pork in a wild type situation, to switch to chicken, and she loved that, I then moved her to raw chicken livers. A note here is that she hated switching to raw food at first and really hated me for a couple days. In fact, the first raw food I ever tried to feed her was wild trout and she turned her nose up! These days she loves it when I give her some raw wild salmon scraps. Once she got used to raw meat, she gets really pissed off at me when she doesn’t get her liver or raw milk. She has even stopped really eating her dry cat food, which she used to really love.

BC Crushes Local Food Community

The past few days have been very disturbing, with a judge who is obviously in the pocket of the Milk Industry, refusing to even enter into a discourse about the situation of our local Community Supported Dairy. At the end of the trial he ordered our local Agister, Alice to stop milking our cows (poor cows) and she has been forced to resign as our Agister.

From Chilliwack Times:

Ontario dairy farmer Michel Schmidt has taken over Chilliwack’s Home on the Range raw milk dairy so the flow of milk can continue to hundreds of members of the co-operative.

Fraser Health has been trying to shut down Home on the Range for more than two years and on Tuesday succeeded in forcing the cowshare operator Alice Jongerden to officially resign as part of a court-ordered condition.

In a press release issued by Jongerden Friday morning, Schmidt says “We have reached the level of a new and powerful dictatorship called bureaucracy in the name of food safety, and in the favour of multinational corporations.”

The point that Michael Schmidt makes here is key. This isn’t really about health or food safety (Maple Leaf foods would have been shut down for causing 20 deaths if that was the case). It is about the monopoly that the milk industry wishes to maintain – as usual it is about greed.

Raw Milk on Trial Again – Vancouver BC

After getting typhoid in Burma/Myanmar in 2006 we lived in the Catskills in New York where we were able to get raw goats milk right from the farm. My digestive system had been so damaged by the typhoid and a wicked New Zealand mold and I really needed the fresh raw milk to help to heal.

Any time I have to eat food from industrial dairies and factory farms, my digestive health gets worse resultin in me getting severe migraines with cyclical vomiting every ten days or so.

The following is an article is reposted from the website The Bovine.

Raw Milk: It’s Milk Without the Confusion

Almost every summer, when I was a kid, I spent on the farm where my Grandmother was born, some kilometers outside Warsaw, Poland.

Coming from Long Island New York, it was like stepping back in a time machine. If you wanted to make a call you had to phone a central switchboard and they would connect you. Primitive, right? Endless fields of wheat, a swimming hole, barefoot kids, chickens in and out of the kitchen, homemade everything AND raw milk.
